Ricardo Nagaoka is a Latino-Japanese photographer born in
Asunción, Paraguay. He moved to Ontario, Canada in 2005, found
himself in Rhode Island to attend the Rhode Island School of Design,
then drove across the country to live in Portland, OR.
Drawing from his experiences as an outsider, Ricardo’s work explores
our constructs of home, heritage, and selfhood in this increasingly
globalized world. He finds an urgency in questioning the arbitrary nature
of how we delineate social, political, and national borders, making images
that challenge our ingrained nature of trying to place people and ideas into
neat little boxes.
